A Typical Day On The Keto Diet

A Typical Day On The Keto Diet – a day in the life of Low Carb & Ketogenic Diet meals

A Typical Day On The Keto Diet

A Typical Day On The Keto Diet

When you’ve been on the keto diet, you get into a routine. Enjoying mixing and matching ingredients to create delicious meals is easy with the choice of low carb foods available.

Here’s a typical day on the keto diet, to give you ideas for meals to enjoy – whether you’re a beginner or veteran Keto follower, you’re sure to find inspiration. (Here’s my full keto food list for beginners for you.)

Day In The Life of Keto – Breakfast

Keto Breakfast Hash on a typical day on the keto diet

Breakfast usually involves fried eggs, vegetables and a couple of portions of healthy fats. In the above example, I’ve put together a Keto Breakfast Hash which includes beef mince, mushrooms, radishes and fried eggs.

You could enjoy eggs any way and with any vegetables you like on the side. To elevate the fat content, you could enjoy your breakfast with a side of avocado or sour cream.

Typical Keto Lunch

Keto lunch of Avocado-and-feta-salad

For lunch, I usually enjoy a salad. I start with a bed of greens and then top them with low carb and high fat ingredients.

For example, the above Avocado Salad is loaded with healthy fats thanks to the avocado and added flavour with feta.

Keto Dinner Ideas

Keto dinner idea - tuna mornay

Dinner can easily be adapted from regular favourites. For example, I’ll often enjoy a meaty bolognaise, but without spaghetti, or burgers with lettuce cups instead of buns.

A regular go to dinner is the above pictured Tuna Mornay. (Get the recipe here.) You simply replace carby pasta with cauliflower and you can enjoy a cheesy, comfort dish.

Low Carb Snack Ideas

Bulletproof-hot-chocolate keto snack

If you feel the need to snack between meals, then there are loads of easy keto snack ideas. (Here are 17!)

My regulars are either strawberries and cream or hot chocolate – each being nourishing and keeping me full for hours.

A Typical Day On The Keto Diet - a day in the life of Low Carb & Ketogenic Diet meals - a look at breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Sometimes I’ll have a day similar to above, others I’ll go for vegetarian only meals for a change or intermittent fast and skip a meal.

The beauty of the Keto diet is that you can adapt to suit whatever you feel like and choose from endless meal options.

Keto Breakfast Hash

June 21, 2018 by Easy Keto Living

Keto Breakfast Hash – An easy low carb breakfast idea with radish, mushrooms, beef mince and fried eggs. Simple gluten free breakfasts for easy mornings.

Keto Breakfast Hash with radish, mushrooms and beef mince

Keto Breakfast Hash

There are so many variations on the Keto Breakfast Hash. The one I’m sharing today is a mish mash of ingredients I had in my fridge at the time, that came together to create breakfast perfection.

It started with a portion of beef mince, left over from making bunless burgers. I decided to brown the mince, then cook up some sliced mushrooms and radishes, along with adding tamari for flavour.

Frying up a Keto Breakfast Hash

Once cooked, space was made for eggs, which were fried until cooked. The resulting breakfast was hearty and flavourful and the perfect way to start the day.

This is a combination which worked really well and one I’ll be creating again in the future. You could of course mix and match the ingredients depending on what you have in your kitchen and what you feel like enjoying in your own breakfast hash.

If you’re a fan of the classic comfort dish Tuna Mornay, then you will love this Keto Diet friendly version. Cauliflower is used in place of carby pasta and you really don’t even miss it.

I like to use my red spot frying pan as it let me know when the frying pan is hot enjoy to add the chopped cauliflower.

Then, it’s simple a matter of cooking the cauliflower until browned, adding more butter when needed.

Once the cauliflower has cooked, you just add tuna, mascarpone cheese and heaps of grated cheese. Cook until your Keto Tuna Mornay is cheesy and creamy to your liking.

Low Carb Ice Cream Float

March 30, 2018 by Easy Keto Living

Low Carb Ice Cream Float Recipe – An easy keto ice cream soda float that’s simple to make and a delight to enjoy.

Low Carb Ice Cream Float topped with whipped cream

Low Carb Ice Cream Float Recipe

I haven’t had an ice cream float since I was a kid, so I was curious to experiment with what I had in my kitchen to discover if I could create a low carb ice cream float recipe.

The results? Surprisingly simple – it’s doesn’t take much to create a fizzy, icy drink with ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.

Low Carb Fizzy Drink Ideas

In this instance I used Sparkling Water for the fizzy element. But, you could use your low carb soda of choice instead. I’ve even tried making it with Kombucha and it’s resulted in a tangy ice cream float.

What Ice Cream To Use?

Ice Cream in a glass

I used a couple of spoonfuls of Halo Top, because that’s what I had in my freezer. I know there’s debate around whether Halo is actually low carb or not – I include a couple of spoons from time to time and don’t have any problems.

You can use whatever low carb ice cream you usually enjoy, or make your own with an ice cream maker. (Where to find one!) Simply follow your favourite ice cream recipe and substitute in the sugar with stevia and you’ll be enjoying low carb ice cream which you can then turn into a low carb ice cream float in no time!

Flavour Options

Low Carb Baileys Ice Cream Float

There are endless flavour options, you can go for a plain vanilla ice cream with sparkling water and add a teeny splash of vanilla extract to flavour. Or, you can go crazy and use berry ice cream and top with fresh berries.

I’ve also had success with caramel flavoured ice cream and mixing through Irish Cream Essence for a sweet and caramel/baileys flavoured low carb ice cream float. (Where to find Irish Cream Essence.)

My preference is to always top mine with a generous swirl of whipped cream. Feel free to do the same.

As you can see – the choice is yours. Mix and match to create ice cream sodas that float your boat!

  2. Gently pour over sparkling water, it will fizz up quickly so go slow until the glass is full.
  3. Mix through any flavourings or toppings of choice.

Keto Broccoli Stir Fry

March 19, 2018 by Easy Keto Living

Keto Broccoli Stir Fry Recipe with Turmeric and Mushrooms – an easy low carb and Ketogenic Diet friendly vegetarian stir fry. You’ll love this simple vegetarian dish which is great as a side dish or a whole meal.

Keto broccoli stir fry in a bowl

Keto Broccoli Stir Fry Recipe

When you feel like a massive bowl of veggies, you can’t go past a Keto Broccoli Stir Fry, cooked in heaps of healthy butter. I just love cooking with nutritious Turmeric, not only does it bring a unique flavour to a dish, but the health benefits, including it’s anti-inflammatory properties, are phenomenal too.

To bring up the fat content of this dish, simply add heaps of butter while cooking. The butter will be absorbed into the ingredients and bring a rich flavour to the dish.

You may enjoy your dish as is, or add a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese to bring a cheesy, salty element to your stir fry.

I haven’t specified quantities because it really depends on whether you want this to be a side dish or a whole meal. Use as much as you want, especially with the ground turmeric. If you’re new to using turmeric, start with a couple of shakes, taste and add more until it tastes just as you want.

  3. Cook until reduced and cooked through, adding more butter when needed.
  4. Serve and enjoy.

Keto Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Keto Chocolate Mousse Recipe – An easy low carb chocolate dessert pudding that’s Dairy Free and LCHF too!

Bowl of Keto Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Keto Chocolate Mousse Recipe

There are so many chocolate mousse variations out there. I love trying new recipes and comparing different methods of making Keto Chocolate Mousse that taste as good, if not better, than sugar loaded alternatives.

This variation comes from the latest Nigella Lawson cookbook, “At My Table“. I was looking through the cookbook to find recipes which I can easily modify to be Keto and the only swap this dairy free chocolate mousse needed was switching the sugar for Stevia. Pretty easy modification!

So I set about making my first batch to see how it tasted. And? This chocolate mousse is the stuff of dreams! It’s rich and chocolatey and perfect whether you’re keto, paleo, dairy free or just want to enjoy a decadent chocolate mousse.

Keto Chocolate Mousse in a bowl from above

A Quick Word About Ingredients – note that this recipe is made with raw eggs, so don’t feed to children, pregnant women or anyone with a weakened immunity.

The chocolate I used is 90% Dark Lindt (find it here), the higher the % the lower the carbs tends to be. You can adjust the sweetness depending on how dark the chocolate is that you use.

Keto Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Adapted from Nigella Lawson, At My Table

  • 150g/5.2 ounces 90% Dark Chocolate (Find it here)
  • 1/3 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Find it here)
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1/4 Cup Stevia (Find it here)
  • Pinch of Salt
  1. Place the chocolate in a bowl over simmering water or in your microwave to melt.
  2. Once melted, set aside to cool and after 10 minutes stir in the extra virgin olive oil.
  3. Separate the eggs into two bowls, with yolks in one and whites in the other.
  4. Beat the egg whites until you have firm peaks.
  5. Then beat the yolks, stevia and salt together.
  6. Pour the chocolate mixture into the yolk mixture and fold together.
  7. Finally, pour the beaten egg whites into the mixture, a third at a time and gently fold in.
  8. Move to smaller individual or one large serving dish and refrigerate to thicken.

Keto Halloumi Fries – How to make easy and crispy Halloumi Fries which are low carb and Ketogenic Diet friendly.

Keto Halloumi Fries on a plate with lemon

Keto Halloumi Fries

Halloumi is one of those ingredients that you either absolutely adore or you’d rather do without. I’m in the absolutely can’t live without Halloumi camp and I love frying the cheese up and enjoying it in different recipes.

I recently shared a Halloumi Salad recipe on the blog (get it here) and today I’m sharing my latest Halloumi Cheese obsession with you – Crispy Keto Halloumi Fries.

All you need is Halloumi and you simply melt plenty of butter in a frying pan. (This one’s my favourite!)

Then, chop your halloumi cheese into “fries” and fry until golden and crispy on all sides.

Halloumi fries in the frying pan

Once cooked, I like to squeeze over some fresh lemon juice, which perfectly balances the salty Halloumi Cheese. These are the BEST Keto friendly fry alternative as they only have one ingredient and crisp up easily without the need for a crumb coating.

Keto Halloumi Fries with a lemon

Keto Halloumi Fries Recipe

  • Halloumi Cheese
  • Butter, for frying
  • A wedge of Lemon
  1. Heat butter in a frying pan.
  2. While the butter is melting, chop the Halloumi cheese into chips.
  3. When the frying pan is hot and the butter has melted, place the Halloumi Chips into the frying pan.
  4. Add more butter if needed and cook until the underside is golden.
  5. Then, flip over and cook until all sides are golden and crispy.
  6. Remove to a plate and squeeze over fresh lemon juice, to taste.

Bulletproof Hot Chocolate Recipe

February 2, 2018 by Easy Keto Living

Bulletproof Hot Chocolate Recipe – An easy keto hot drink recipe with almond milk, heavy cream to enjoy instead of coffee.

Bulletproof hot chocolate in a mug

Bulletproof Hot Chocolate Recipe

There’s been a “Bulletproof Coffee” craze happening in health circles for a while. It’s basically adding heaps of healthy fats, usually butter or coconut oil, to your coffee.

The drink is meant to help you meet your fat macros and keep you satiated, or full, until your next meal.

Mug of keto friendly hot chocolate

If you’re a coffee fan, then go ahead and enjoy Bulletproof Coffee. If, however, you’re after a change or coffee is not one of your favourite things. (Or, like me – you like coffee but it doesn’t like you!)

Then, give Keto Bulletproof Hot Chocolate a go. You get to enjoy a warming drink, full of healthy fats to help you meet your macros.

Keto Bulletproof Hot Chocolate

I incorporate Bulletproof Hot Chocolates in my diet by enjoying one in the afternoon. I then tend to intermittent fast until the next morning.

The drink is enjoyed instead of dinner and keeps me full for the whole afternoon/evening.

Yes, that’s the complete opposite of most people’s intermittent fast. A bulletproof hot chocolate or coffee is often enjoyed in the morning in place of breakfast. I tend to have mine in place of dinner instead!

However you choose to enjoy yours, you will find that the healthy fats will keep you full for hours and hours.

Bulletproof Hot Chocolate Recipe

  • 3/4 Cup Milk of Choice
  • 1/3 Cup Cream
  • 1-2 Rows Dark Chocolate – at least 85% to 90%
  • Sweetener of choice, to taste
  • Optional extras – for additional fat, consider adding Butter, Coconut Oil or MCT Oil and/or topping with whipped cream
  1. Place the milk, cream and chocolate into a small saucepan.
  2. Slowly bring up to a simmer over low to medium heat.
  3. As soon as the hot chocolate starts simmering, remove from the heat and pour into a mug.
  4. Stir through sweetener and optional extras.
